Chapter Sixteen

Cassidy hit the floor as someone collided with her. She flipped onto her back, ready to fight.

The masked man had returned. And he held a knife.

Her blood pressure surged.

As the man lunged at her, Cassidy turned, rolling toward the door.

She reached for something—anything—that she could use to protect herself. There was nothing. She’d left her gun on her nightstand, well out of reach.

The man came at her again.

She rolled again. This time, she hit her bed.

She had nowhere else to go in the small room.

The man let out a grunting chuckle, like he knew he had her trapped.

And delighted in it.

That was unacceptable.

Cassidy kicked her legs in the air, and the knife flew from his hands. As he lunged for it, she raised her knee and caught him in the gut.

A moan escaped him.

He forgot about his knife and turned to Cassidy. He reached for her neck, squeezing it, cutting off her oxygen.

Cassidy clawed against his grip, desperate for air.

It was not going to end this way. It couldn’t.

“I told you to leave this alone,” the man whispered. “Why can’t you let things go?”

If he expected her to answer, he was mistaken. Stars formed in the periphery of her vision. Cassidy wasn’t going to last much longer.

She desperately tried to pry his fingers from her windpipe.

There had to be something she could do to end this before this man ended her.

She reached behind her. Her fingers felt something. Was that . . . a cord?

Her night stand should be there. This had to be the cord for her lamp.

She tugged on the cord—then jerked it hard. The heavy glass base of the lamp hit the man’s head then crashed to the floor and shattered.

The distraction gave Cassidy enough time to crawl away, climb to her feet, and . . . run.

She knew she didn’t have time to grab her gun. The best thing she could do right now was to get as far away from the man as possible. Because if he caught her again, he’d kill her.

Pain jolted through her foot.

She must have stepped on some glass as she fled.

She cringed at each jab of pain.

She wouldn’t get far with this agony.

Instead, she ran over to Ty’s place and ducked behind his truck.

She tried to control her breathing as she watched and waited. She didn’t have much time, just enough to gather herself.

The man stomped down the stairs, slowly, carefully. His head swiveled, scanning around him as he searched for Cassidy.

As he passed Elsa, an animal-like sound came from inside.

Animal like? Kujo. The man must have locked the dog in her truck while Cassidy was in the shower.

Now the canine was snarling and barking . . . but unable to get out.

Cassidy held her breath as she watched and waited for the man’s next move.

“I know you’re out here,” the man yelled amidst Kujo’s angry snarls. “Why don’t we just make this easy?”

No way.

Cassidy crouched lower.

Who was behind that mask?

Cassidy glanced down and caught the reflection of something on the ground.
